not seen any posts from anyone updating from 9.10.2-U6.

Our oldest server started out on the 9 train and is now sitting at 11.2 all by way of upgrades.

I can't say going directly from 9.10 to 11.2 will work but I can say that going by way of 11.0 and 11.1 worked just fine for us. Of course, we're just running it as a NAS. No jails, VMs, plugins or anything else outside the core file serving functionality.

As long as you backup your configuration and don't upgrade your pools (which is a manual process once the FreeNAS server is upgraded), until you're satisfied that 11.2 is fully-functional, there is little risk to your data.

Cheers,
Matt

I'm getting some errors while trying to install 11.2 from USB created with Rufus 3.4.1430 on Windows 10 (also tried 3.3.1400 with two different thumb drives).

ISO Checksum is OK

Tried with 11.1-U6 and it worked fine no problem, also Rufus behaves more like it usually do, asks if you want ISO or DD mode and also says "hey i need to download grub, is this ok?". For 11.2 it just grays out everything and just writes it.

Code:
FreeBSD/x86 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.1
(Wed Dec 5 15:05:26 EST 2018 root@nemesis.tn.ixsystems.com)
read 272 from 128 to 0xdbe03220, error: 0x80
read 258 from 2 to 0xdbdf3620, error: 0x80
read 260 from 64 to 0xdbe03220, error: 0x80
read 1 from 64 to 0xdvdfb220, error: 0x80
read 1 from 1 to 0xdbdf3420, error: 0x80
panic: free: guard1 fail @ 0xdbef9320 from unknown:0

What am I doing wrong?

+1; I'm getting the same. I've tried different USB drives, have verified the SHA256 checksum, tried to load the installer on a different machine (Server doesn't do UEFI, but main computer does). I get the same error all the time.

I did get an SSD to load this on (based upon other readers comments (here and other places)) but I just can't get the installer to load up. Reverting back to 11.1 for now...

It doesn't, or, at least, didn't for me. The new GUI also seems to freak out (as in totally doesn't work) if you don't have local storage enabled (dom.storage.enabled = false in Firefox). Plus I get tons of other damage in the new GUI, but I haven't investigated.

And you should manually clear all the caches after an update. It's not too good at figuring that out, resulting in Frankenstein GUIs that look mostly right but might not work at all.

Okay so I'm three days in and no issues! So the plans for tomorrow will be to get a reverse proxy setup and migrate a couple of jails. For once I do not anticipate many if any problems however will keep you posted of progress. Overall a very good upgrade.

Hi everyone,

After the update, I have login issue. I get the following when I try to connect:

Connecting to NAS... Make sure the NAS system is powered on and connected to the network.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

I have just gone from 11.1.U6 to 11.2, and found the plugins I had installed are not instlled in this latest version, but just reinstalled them

You "found" incorrectly; they're still there. They just don't appear in the new GUI.

It's looking like it probably has something to do with an attempted access to https://sentry.ixsystems.com/api/3/store/blablabla which isn't going to work because network engineering workstations here don't have Internet access.

So, question for @dlavigne and/or any developers ... why is connecting to a NAS generating Internet-bound traffic?

i am seeing problems with Windows Server VM's... At first i thought it was a migration problem so i deleted the Windows Server 2016 VM and recreated, installing the OS from scratch. A few hours in, it locks up. I tried Windows Server 2012 R2 and got the same result...

Beware...

The new web UI is not working very well for me:
  • It won't load at all using Safari on iOS, and shows high CPU usage when I use Safari on macOS (which the legacy UI does not).
  • When I click to view available plugins, it spins forever. If I refresh the page, it insists I have not set up a pool for the jails. When I choose a pool (again), and click "activate", it just spins forever.
  • The CPU temperature is reported incorrectly (it is correct when I switch to the legacy UI).
  • The CPU usage is reported incorrectly (it is correct in the legacy).
Aesthetically, I vastly prefer the efficient display of information of the old UI and wish to continue using that, but with all the functionality of 11.2. Everything takes up way too much space in the new UI.

I got my server up last night!

I decided to forget about booting from the 11.2 install media. I decided to run the 11.1 install media (which works flawlessly). I installed it on my SSD ... took about 5 minutes. Rebooted to SSD and I was in! I then ran the upgrade to 11.2 (by changing trains) on the SSD.

After it finished, I was booted into 11.2. I then hooked up one of the USB drives I had installed 11.2 to but couldn't boot from. Somehow, it ended up booting off this USB because all my certificates, etc. were there ... jails, VMs, etc. I then recreated my boot mirror and I'm back in business ... now to upgrade jails...

My end state: 11.2 installed on 1 SSD and 1 USB drive. SSD is my boot device.

Yeah, I don't know why it is that web developers are trying to make everything look like a minimalistic cell phone UI these days. That's nice if you are Apple and you're actually fine with not exposing complexities to the end user at all, but FreeNAS isn't that, and all the complexity is just hidden in ways that aren't really that obvious.

Of course, the old GUI was tragic in that way as well. As an example, I'm doing an in-place upgrade of a 11 drive Z3 pool, one drive at a time. In the old GUI, I have to navigate to "View Disks" to see the size and serial on disks. But I have no clue which disk is the disk that's no longer in the pool.

So then I have to go to Storage -> Volumes and click on the pool, then click on Volume Status. That last little bit I only know how to find because of years of familiarity with FreeNAS... the average user ain't going to find it easily. So then it shows me the component devices by FreeBSD /dev name. I can then play "hunt for the missing number":

Ok, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, ahh it's 11 that's now missing. Well this is merely tedious on a 12 drive array but would be pretty aggravating on a 96.

I appreciate that the pool has been added to the disks list in the new GUI, a nice step in the right direction, but it would be nice to see some vast improvements in the volume status (now pool status) page.

I mean, come on, either decide on partitions or disks. The volume status page refers to partitions ("p2") but does administrative actions on disks. And when it displays things like this, why is it offering to replace disk da10, clearly a 4TB disk, with da1 or da2, which are both in the dozens of GB size range? That can never work, it's dumb to offer it. Plus it would be nice to maybe list the size and serial numbers.

Replacing disk da10, 4TB, 656XYZABC

da11, 8TB, 1STABCXYZ

This would be very useful to those of us here in the trenches.

...and you have to know that "blank sheet of notebook paper" means "Volume Status."

I'll do you one better... with multipath disks, there is even another level of abstraction required....

View Volumes -> Volume Status -> View Multipaths -> View Disks

I've been asking for a single hot link from the volume status screen that would pull up all the disk information. Still not there yet.

Cheers,
Matt

Owners of HP Gen8 Microserver have a boot problem: https://redmine.ixsystems.com/issues/52441
Known for two months.
My conclusion after reading it all: HP ProLiant Gen8 Microserver does NOT have a boot problem, some of their owners create that problem.
The HP server BIOS boots without problems from HD's, usb 2.0 sticks, micro-sdhc cards, etc. But if you try booting it from some other media, you get problems with the BTX Loader.

I did test it on my own Proliant Gen8 Microserver by updating from 11.1-U6 to 11.2-RELEASE. Here are the results:
#1: Removed ( as a precaution) all four HD's, replaced the micro-sd card with a spare, and booted from an USB 2.0 stick on the front USB port with 11.2-RELEASE.iso on it: Installation of 11.2 went smoothly without any problem, and took about 4 minutes.
#2: Encouraged by this good result, I replaced the 4 HD's from my Zpool, removed the spare microSD and replaced it with the 11.1-U6 one, and booted again from the USB stick with 11.2-RELEASE. And (of course) kept my fingers crossed. I selected the upgrade option, allowed the installer to touch my microSD card and waited for the result. At the crucial moment, when it rebooted, I saw in a flash the BTX Loader, but the installation continued. When it tried to import my Zpool, it went quiet for some 5 minutes...... and then it finished the installation quickly. It rebooted automatically, and there it was: 11.2 in it's full glory. After testing things, everything was OK, even after a manual reboot.

By the way, I had connected a display, a keyboard and a mouse to the server to follow the update process and get it started. But once started, don't interrupt the update process. It's asking for trouble!

It seam as if you didn't read the Bug report that the post is refering to.
There has never been a problem updating or booting with usb media or micro-sd.
It is about the 5th sata port and using it to boot from ssd/hdd.
