VMworld 2015 Recap

September 4, 2015

VMworld 2015 was one of the largest trade shows I have been to. The iXsystems booth was mobbed with many of the 22,000 attendees from all across the globe. In every corner of the exhibit hall were many recognizable names of companies in the tech industry. The conference was lively all week long – with press and analysts, exhibitors, partners, and attendees expressing enthusiasm at every turn.

The number of people who came by and instantly recognized iXsystems, FreeNAS, or TrueNAS was astounding. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. No one had a negative thing to say about FreeNAS or TrueNAS. One of the VMware instructors stopped by and said that he recommends FreeNAS to all of his students. To hear the many good stories about our SAN/NAS solutions including FreeNAS (the world’s leading Open Source software defined storage solution) and TrueNAS (a FreeNAS-based enterprise-strength storage array), really showed the impact that we have made and continue to make in the open source and storage technology world.
Our demos showed the benefits of using TrueNAS with VMware, including our support of VAAI and VMware snapshots. Our senior engineers were present to explain how to best utilize TrueNAS for vSphere 5 and 6. We also gave details on our vCenter integration.

One thing that made the iXsystems booth unique this year was our arcade setup featuring Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, a game that many event goers grew up to love. The theme aligned with our slogan, “Fight for Economical Enterprise VM Storage”. Participants mentioned not having played the game for 20 years, and the expression of nostalgia and joy could be seen as they battled the one and only Ryu. To top it off, we held a tournament on the final day, during which the champion, Charlie C. of San Lorenzo, won a FreeNAS Mini valued at $1,000.
