VMworld 2014 Recap

Last week, several members of the iX team went up to San Francisco to participate in VMworld. This was the biggest show we’ve done in a while, with an estimated 20,000 people in attendance.

On the show floor, we shared booth space with HGST and debuted our newest product, the TrueNAS z50 TrueFlash. TrueFlash is especially designed for heterogeneous virtualization environments. Featuring an all-flash storage array built using HGST s842 drives, it can be configured to hold up to 24TB of raw storage capacity before deduplication. With a 15x deduplication ratio, that translates to 200-300TB of usable capacity!

Over on the HGST side, they had presentations running constantly for the entire conference. They also showed off the He6 Helium Drive, a 6TB HDD that uses less power and runs at a lower temperature than other drives, due to being hermetically sealed with helium gas. To prove their point, they displayed a server running in a fully submerged cooling environment, with an He6 drive happily humming along under several inches of fluid.
We saw several iX partners there, including Intel and SuperMicro. One very impressive display was from Nvidia, who showed off their graphics virtualization technology, capable of consolidating dozens of graphics workstations into a few servers.
The booth got a lot of interest and activity as people came to see the system we had on display. Several of our partners and customers also stopped by to say hi after they found out we were there via our social media channels. We had keychains, horns, and t-shirts on hand for the fans that sought us out. Overall, we felt the show was a good experience for us and gave us a lot of exposure. We’ve got big plans for VMworld next year!
