Texas Linux Fest took place last weekend in the Austin region. Josh Smith of the PC-BSD QA Team and Kris Moore, Director of PC-BSD Development, were on hand to staff the FreeBSD booth and talk about PC-BSD and FreeNAS with conference attendees. Below are Josh’s thoughts on how the conference went overall:
“We had a great time getting to visit with all of the fine folks down in San Marcos, TX, this year at TXLF! As always the horns were a big hit, and we were able to give away all the schwag in exception to about 50 disks each of PC-BSD and FreeNAS. We had a lot of good questions and interest in ZFS and how it is able to snapshot huge amounts of data so quickly, as well as interest in entry-level NAS solutions so we made sure to mention the FreeNAS Mini!
We had hundreds of visitors to the booth and by the end of both convention days, we had many BSD fans wearing the IX horns proudly around the convention center. We had several requests for PC-BSD stickers and a couple of Lumina DE fans stopped by and mentioned they’d like to see some schwag for Lumina DE as well.
The TXLF staff were well organized as always, and attentive to any needs that came up. The venue was big enough and gave visitors plenty of room to feel comfortable as we all hacked away on our laptops. There were two awesome BSD talks given this year by Aaron Poffenberger and they were both very well attended. In fact, it was standing room only and even then there were 30 people or so that were just standing in the back.
If you’d like to check out the talks, here’s the link for the second talk “BSD for Linux Users“. The slides for the “FreeNAS: ZFS for Home and Office” talk can be viewed here .
Well, I think that about sums it up for this year’s TXLF. We had a great time and can’t wait to see all the BSD fans again next year!”
