SNIA SDC 2016 Recap: Brad Meyer

September 29, 2016

The SNIA Storage Developers Conference was held in Santa Clara on September 19-22. Specifically designed for developers, I went to this conference to interact with my storage development peers and to hear what SNIA and other companies planned to announce. Also at the conference I supported Michael Dexter’s talk and our BoF session on Open Source Storage.
The week started off with iXsystems hosting a Birds of a Feather (BoF) session on open source storage. The iXsystems team was out in full force and I helped moderate the discussion. Towards the end, Jordan Hubbard, iXsystems CTO & FreeNAS Project Lead, gave a quick demonstration of the new FreeNAS 10-BETA.

The SDC started with a keynote address from Dan Maslowski, the Citigroup Global Engineering Head of Citi Storage and Engineered Systems. He spoke about what Citigroup is doing with storage worldwide and how we, as vendors, can take advantage of the opportunities found there. iXsystems’ session on “Corporate/Open Source Community Relationships: The OpenZFS Example” was presented by Michael Dexter. Even though it was held on the morning of the last day of the conference, which was a lightly attended day overall, Michael’s session pretty much filled the room.
I attended many of the sessions that were not specifically oriented around coding including What One Billion Hours of Spinning Hard Drives Can Tell Us?, Managing Data by Objectives, and Swordfish Deep Dive. Swordfish is a new emerging open standard from SNIA.org, under the Storage Management Technical Work Workgroup (SSM TWG).
Overall, I found the conference very educational and informative and I can’t wait to attend next year.
