iX™ Team members Matt Olander, Denise Ebery, James Nixon, and Dru Lavigne recently attended So Cal Linux Expo (SCALE) on behalf of the FreeBSD Project. This year’s SCALE conference had record-breaking numbers with over 3000 open source aficionados in attendance. We did many demonstrations of PC-BSD and FreeNAS and gave out a ton of DVDs, horns, stickers, and brochures at the booth. In addition, the FreeBSD Foundation raised nearly $400 in donations.

Matt Olander, iXsystems Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer, states, “I had the opportunity to speak with many fans and several clients of iX. I heard many people mention that they had heard great things about us, especially from TechSnap and the Linux Action Show. Duke University is using both FreeNAS and TrueNAS. They’ve built their Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) on our platform. They are impressed with the scalable FreeNAS platform. Another university would like to use TrueNAS over EMC but they need FIPS 140 validation. We’re talking with Seagate about their SAS SED drives that have the encryption built-in. This will make TrueNAS the perfect platform for sensitive data like healthcare information.” In addition to the BSD booth presence (both OpenBSD and FreeBSD had booths at the conference, with NetBSD sharing one of the booths), there were several BSD-related talks at SCALE. Dru Lavigne gave a well-attended talk on What’s New in FreeNAS 9.3; Michael Dexter entertained the crowd with a talk about FreeBSD Virtualization Options; David Maxwell discussed his latest project (Pipecut – Interactive Pipeline Editor); and Brooks Davis spoke about Booting FreeBSD on BERI. All in all, this was the most successful SCALE conference to date. The iX crew had a fantastic time educating attendees about FreeBSD, FreeNAS, and PC-BSD. We’re already looking forward to SCALE 14x in 2016. In the meantime, stay tuned for a recap of our next upcoming show: AsiaBSDCon!
