October 21, 2011

This Thursday, iXsystems attended the Disks LSPE (San Francisco Bay Area’s Large-Scale Production Engineering) meetup where our very own James Nixon gave a presentation about FreeNAS™ 8.0.1.

The meetup, a monthly event, is hosted at Yahoo’s URL Cafe. Our team immensely enjoyed the complimentary pizza and drinks as we claimed our seats. The topic for this meetup was enterprise storage disks. There were speakers from Facebook, Pure Storage, Cirrascale, and of course, iXsystems.
Mohan Srinivasn from Facebook gave an enlightening presentation about FlashCache for Linux and how metadata can be better organized. Mohan focused mainly on the default write-back mode and how it accelerates the typically small writes and reads of a database workload.

Scott Dietzen, CEO of Pure Storage, talked about the performance gap commonly associated with random I/O tasks and Pure Storage’s compression/deduplication solution on flash storage.

Mark Skinner, from Cirrascale, presented their patented vertical cooling technology which allows them to drastically minimize the amount of storage space needed. Mark gave FreeNAS™ a shout out on his list of open source software storage solutions.

For FreeNAS™ 8.0.1, James first gave the audience a brief background on the founder and his idea. He then moved on and listed the new changes found in 8.0.1 as well as a brief demonstration on how volumes are made and organized in FreeNAS™.

James Nixon giving a live demonstration on how to use FreeNAS ™8.0.1.
