Fossetcon was held on September 11-13 in Orlando, FL. iXsystems sponsored a FreeBSD booth in the expo area of this event. It was conveniently located next to the FreeBSD Brasil booth as three members of one of the largest FreeBSD user groups in the world came from Brazil to assist at that booth.
There were a surprising number of FreeBSD users at this event who came over to the FreeBSD booths to introduce themselves. There is a lot of hi-tech in the Orlando area and FreeBSD is well represented. The CEO of Atlantic.Net dropped by to introduce himself and some of his team. Atlantic.Net is a big user of FreeBSD and recently announced its FreeBSD VPS Offering.
The ZFS 101 presentation was well attended. As usual, participants were blown away by the ease of restoring previous versions of files using Life Preserver’s built-in file browser as well as how PC-BSD automagically creates boot environments before it applies a system patch or upgrades the operating system or software. There was great interest in seeing the addition of boot environments to the upcoming FreeNAS 9.3.
As usual, many booth attendees are already happy FreeNAS users and quite a few have already purchased the FreeNAS Mini or have some TrueNAS appliances and/or iXsystems servers in their infrastructure.
The FreeBSD booth raised $210 for the FreeBSD Foundation. This was the first Fossetcon, and kudos go to the conference organizers for a very well organized event. The location was convenient and had easy access to dining options. The expo area was large and well appointed. Attendance was very good for the day of tutorials which had 4 tracks. And the quality of speakers, over 5 tracks and 2 days, was excellent. We look forward to coming to Orlando again for Fossetcon 2015!
