AsiaBSDCon 2015 Recap

}

March 18, 2015

This year’s AsiaBSDcon started with the DevSummit on Thursday. We discussed making more utilities output XML/JSON with libxo, the work Warner was doing on making the kernel more modular with auto PNP loading of modules, and some security related bits with the work John Mark Gurney is doing to sources of random. In addition, Bapt gave a talk about the new work being done to allow packaging the FreeBSD base system and the plans for getting this into 11.0.

Immediately afterwards, we stayed for bhyvecon where we heard updates about the status of Bhyve in the base system along with their future plans for VGA support, BIOS emulation, and more. We also got to hear a talk about using FreeBSD as Xen Dom0, and discussed that more. The conference days were fairly busy. On the first day, Dru, Ken, and I gave our talks, one right after the other. As usual, some of the best discussions happened in the hallway track as well.

We attended various presentations. The highlight for me was Matt Ahrens discussing the new ZFS features we can expect in the next week or so, particularly resumable send-recv support. I got to talk to Matt more afterwards to discuss best practices in implementing this for our utilities. Allan Jude and I were also able to record a few interviews during the first day, which will air later on BSDNow. In total, there were about 150 attendees at the conference and we raised $715 for the FreeBSD Foundation.

I had a lot of good discussions with many folks during the banquet on the first night of the conference. I think this year was the first time FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD folks were all more freely interchanging ideas and sharing in very helpful dialog about many topics. Overall, the iX crew had a great time at AsiaBSDCon. We can’t wait for next year!
