I realize this is highly dependent on the type of files and the use-case for those files, but as im now building my backup/snapshot plan (using gui based replication to a offsite FN box that i will seed first)- Im looking for what Periodic snapshot schedules others are using on their FN boxes, (please post what snapshot schedule/scheme you use).

I have spent a few hours going though the forums and these are the ones ive found, and added to my notes:
I take a snapshot every 15 minutes that is removed after 24 hours and one at every hour that is kept for 30 days.

hourly (mo-fr, 08:00-18:00) keep for 2 weeks
daily (mo-fr, 08:00 - ?) keep for 2 month
weekly (fr, 08:00 - ?) keep for 4 month
monthly (fr. 08:00 - ?) keep for 1 year

As a comparison, I do :
snapshots every 15 minutes for 2 days (4x 24 x 2 = 192 snapshots)
snapshots every hour for 1 week (7x 24 = 168 more snapshots ; 360 total)
snapshots every day for 4 months ( 4x 31 ; 124 more ; total 484 snapshots )
snapshots every week for 1 year (52 more ; 536 total)
snapshots every 4 weeks for 4 years (52 more ; 588 total

For snapshots to be truly useful, they must happen regularly. FreeNAS allows for snapshot tasks to be configured and will regularly take snapshots and delete them after their set expiration date. One common way of optimizing this schedule is to have several tasks for one dataset – for instance, a task that snapshots a dataset every five minutes but whose snapshots expire after a day and a second task that takes a snapshot every hour, but which will be kept for a month.
