My system:
- FreeNAS-9.10.1 (d989edd)
- Fresh install, meaning I literally installed a fresh FreeNAS on new hardware yesterday.
- Working internet connectivity on host, can ping and dig domains
- Internet working for plugins too, have a Bittorrent Sync plugin jail running flawlessy currently syncing my old data to the new machine
What I want to to:
- Install a standard FreeBSD jail for general purpose use (install software via pkg, for example)
Problem:
Since I could not find a standard jail template in the GUI (only virtualbox), I manually added the following jail template:
Template name: Tried various because I suspected errors, e.g. "freebsd10"
URL: http://download.freenas.org/jails/10/x64/freenas-standard-10.3-RELEASE.tgz
mtree: http://download.freenas.org/jails/10/x64/freenas-standard-10.3-RELEASE.mtree
See screenshot of jail template UI: http://dump.jemu.name/F0NBR.png
I found this blogpost which apparently used the same method successfully: https://www.kirkg.us/posts/running-an-openvpn-server-in-a-freenas-910-jail/
I tried Jails -> new jail -> advanced -> select template described above. FreeNAS proceeds to download the jail template (presumably), I see a progress bar of the download. After the download is completed (progress bar full), the Error message "Unable to find template!" appears above the jail creation dialog.
I have tried this multiple times for different jail template names, jail names, and I tried substituting the jail template URL with a bare IP (I pinged download.freenas.org from the FreeNAS host and used that IP), all of which failed.
I have also tried the non-advanced jail creation settings, simply selection a jail name. It appeared to download a standard FreeBSD jail as I would have wanted anyway, but the resulting error was the same.
Then I added a jail template for a 9.3 standard jail because I'm desparate to get to the bottom of this, and unexpectedly that worked. I now have a standard 9.3 jail on my FreeNAS 9.10 host which doesn't to me any good because pkg doesn't work due to the version mismatch, I presume.
While searching for solutions, I found this bug report: https://bugs.pcbsd.org/issues/11055 with the possible solution of replacing ix-warden in the comments, which I tried, but it didn't work as well.
I'm comfortable with the shell, so if I can run any diagnostic command that would help solve this problem, I'm happy to follow any instructions.
I am also willing to retry my current approach and document anything you think might help solve this.
Thanks!
