Hello,

I have recently upgraded FreeNAS from 8.3.1 to 9.3. I did this because on 8.3.1, log files were stored in /var/log which is in RAM, so I could not trouble shoot random reboots.

I have selected the option in the GUI to store syslog in my ZFS pool. I go to my ZFS pool via shell and cannot find any log files. I then went to /var/log, and all of my log files are still there. How do I get my log files to show up on a dataset like the manual says it should do.

Thanks.

They're in the .system dataset. Don't mess around too much, or you might delete stuff that Samba needs.

On my system at least /var/log is a symlink to the directory on which the system dataset is mounted. So you can read the logs from /var/log but they are actually on the system dataset, and will survive a reboot.
