I'm new to NAS systems, but have just bought an HP Proliant Microserver N40L, and am trying to set this up before installing FreeNAS. My other computers run Linux (apart from my wife's Windows laptop). I would like to use the 5th slot with a hot-swap drive. There are a lot of old blog and forum posts on the web describing doing this, but none of them are very specific about which version of anything to use. I have two questions:

1. I have a BIOS version with ID 041 and version 7/29/2011. Do I need to replace this to add the 5th drive? If so, which version should I use?

2. I have never reflashed the BIOS on anything before, and all the instructions I can find talk about running .exe files and are generally windows only.. Does anyone know a good introductory non-windows Howto?

Thanks for any advice
Graham
