I have re-installed Freenas replacing 9.2.1.3 with 9.2.1.7. Before wiping everything clean and starting over I always had a directory /mnt/nasdata/ that would show up when I clicked on the Browse tab in the add user GUI. I no longer see that or anything but "/" in that window and I don't remember how that was created in the first Freenas install. I can't enter it there either. It just protests about not having a "mount point" when I try to save the added user. As a result I can't get beyond that point in configuring via the GUI.

I have moved the data I want to save to my NFS server and I believe I have wiped the data storage disks [mirrored] clean.

The computers run Fedora 64 bit Linux and I have selected UFS.

Any help appreciated,

Bob.

How your volume was created (is it a UFS mirror, single UFS disk)?
Is your volume accessible via the CLI? (i.e. cd /mnt/nasdata)

Post the following:
  • Hardware specs
  • Error messages from /var/log/messages
  • output of "df -ah"
  • output of "dmesg"

The server runs scientific linux, an AMD procesor with 8g of ram. I can't even ssh into presently to get the spec's. The only connection to the server is via the Freenas browser.

From the GUI shell:
[root@freenas ~]# df -ah
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/ufs/FreeNASs1a 926M 703M 148M 83% /
devfs 1.0k 1.0k 0B 100% /dev
/dev/md0 4.6M 3.3M 902k 79% /etc
/dev/md1 823k 1.5k 756k 0% /mnt
/dev/md2 149M 13M 124M 9% /var
/dev/ufs/FreeNASs4 19M 733k 17M 4% /data

Dmesg but I think I am losing the first few lines in copy/paste:

For the last six months I've had a Freenas server that ran well but I decided to manipulate the dirctories from my linux file manager. When I found that would not work I tried to restore what I had before via the file manager, things got worse!

I decided to reinstall the Freenas stuff. I saved the files to my nfs server and I think I cleaned everything out of the old Freenas and now I am re-installing the server with a later version. It seems that should be simple enough but I am having problems.

As I said the only LAN connection to the server is via the Freenas GUI. I set the ssh service to ON but it rejects my password, although the password works to run the GUI from the browser?

From the Freenas GUI:
System Information
Hostname freenas.local
Build FreeNAS-9.2.1.7-RELEASE-x64 (fdbe9a0)
Platform AMD E-350 Processor
Memory 7784MB

Have you enabled "login as root with password" in the SSH settings? You may also need to enable password authentication.

"Have you enabled "login as root with password" in the SSH settings? You may also need to enable password authentication."

Where do I find these settings? I've gone through the GUI set-up screen a couple of times and don't see them, thought it might be under "services" but if it is I am missing it.

I also connected a keyboard and monitor to the server, all that offers is item 7 which forces a rest of the webgui password. I dunno why I'm having so much trouble, last spring I was able to get Freenas running on two different boxes with a lot less difficulty!

Can it be something remaining on the hardrives. If nothing else, I can install Fedora 20 and wipe them clean and start over. I would like to get this working ...

Thanks

Bob

I did not realize there is a menu under the wrench icon? Duh!

Ok, so now I can ssh into the server. Need to see what else I can do under "Services."
Thank you.

However although I can ssh into the server 192.168.1.48, I can not mount it:

[root@box7 bobg]# mount 192.168.1.48:/mnt/nasdata/bobg /mnt/box48/

mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.48:/mnt/nasdata/bobg

I can't configure Freenas until it is mounted. Access denied by server would seem to make it a Freenas problem?

Or is there something wrong with my mount command?

I have the line:
192.168.1.48:/mnt/nasdata/bobg /mnt/box48/ nfs default 0 0
in /etc/fstab. And that has always worked until now.

I still do not have a working Freenas server. Yesterday I tried installing 9.3b, gave up on that as an even bigger effort.
I then removed the 9.3b thumb drive and plugged in one with 9.2.1.8. That almost works, except for ssh, without which I can't load my data into the server. Trying to access from either of two Fedora boxes, F-20 and F-21a, produces the same result:

[root@box10 bobg]# ssh bobg@192.168.1.48
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

Can anyone tell me how to correct this?

Bob
