i know something is not set up right, because

MiniDLNA status

Audio files: 0
Video files: 0
Image files: 0
my client (XBMC) can see the UPnP device (this NAS), but it needs media in its own directories - My Picture, My Videos and such, and they're all empty. i guess my question is how do i point my media to these directories?
BTW, xbmc works if i use my NAS as just another network drive.

thanks in advance

Did you read the manual?

You have not given us much information on your setup and to be honest, I wish people would read the small quantity of rules we have here which tell you to post specific information if your asking for assistance. I'm not trying to be unfriendly but I run into this in almost every post asking for help. If you don't get an answer, you know why. Please post the required information.

First, it looks like your media directory is wrong in the MiniDLNA setup. MiniDLNA should be looking at "/media" not "/mnt/NAS-2/jails/dlna_1".
