Hi,
I just wondering if i have to do any further configurations after creating a ZFS volume. I have read that there are some kind of SMART tests or other kinds of tests, one has to manualy add to a scheudle. But i have read too that this is not necessary because ZFS itself would handle such things.

Configure your administrative email account per instructions here: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Quick_Start_Guide#Set_the_Administrative_Email_Address
Configure SMART tests: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/S.M.A.R.T.
Configure ZFS Scrubs: http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/ZFS_Scrubs
Make sure that your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements (ie 8GB ECC RAM): http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Hardware_Requirements
Keep backups of your data because stuff happens.

If you feel like opening yourself to potential criticism, post the hardware details of your system so that we can provide feedback. :)

Are you sure that all those steps are needed?
Configuring your administrative email address is absolutely necessary. It's how you get emails regarding such things as failed login attempts, hard drive failures, zfs scrub results, etc. Configuring SMART tests is a very good idea. ZFS scrubs should automatically be configured, but you may want to tweak the default setting.

Thanks configuring the email adress was the only thing i did allready i will take a clother look at the other steps now. Btw.: is there a way to test if the admin mail configuration is working, like sending a test email?

Absolutely.

Pool scrub: "Performing a ZFS scrub on a regular basis helps to identify data integrity problems, detects silent data corruptions caused by transient hardware issues, and provides early alerts to disk failures."

S.M.A.R.T. tests: "(Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a monitoring system for computer hard disk drives to detect and report on various indicators of reliability. When a failure is anticipated by S.M.A.R.T., the drive should be replaced."

Cyberjock has excellent threads on setting up both of these test schedules.

If you wish to ignore these two tests and not set up the admin email, in the event of data loss, you will receive help from this fantastic community but zero sympathy.
