I have 6x Seagate ST3000DM001's, and this error today.

These drives are notorious for failure...I'm assuming the time has come for two of these? How do I go about getting the smart log errors?

Drop to the command line and input:
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/ada2
smartctl -a /dev/ada4

Download a copy of PuTTY on the computer you use to access and administer FreeNAS.
It's a SECURE shell program that's super easy to use and will make it (scroll/cut/paste) a breeze.

...or
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/ada2 > /mnt/volumename/somedataset/somefilename.log
of course above is an example path and filename. Place the file in a directory that is in one of your shares and you can grab it quick.

Sweet! Thank you very much! I got putty up and running and was able to ssh right in. Quick question, I think I read somewhere that Mint (17, cinnamon) had an ssh program built in be default? Do I need to use putty, or is there a native program within mint that works just the same?

Drop to the command line and input:
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/ada2
smartctl -a /dev/ada4

Back on topic, since the errors, I have restarted the machine and the errors have vanished. A quick look through the results of the commands you gave don't show anything super alarming to me. I would post the results, but the copy paste feature appears to not be working for me on Linux Mint?

Yes! SSH is already in Linux Mint 17. That is exactly what I'm using. So, no you don't need putty.

I'm not sure about the copy and paste not working. It works just fine for me. I just highlight the text then right click the selected text. Then select copy from the menu box.

Ok, after playing around a bit, I've been able to ssh from the terminal on my Mint machine (I've never used ssh before, so bear with me). Anyway, here are the results of the previous commands you gave me;

And then for both drives there is a line that reads "SMART overall-health self-assessment test result". Both of them PASSED.

Is there any glaring issues with these two drives? Any input would be great!
Thanks.

I'm no expert with SMART data, but the seek errors look high. Maybe one of the big brains will stop by and she'd some light.

I agree. Seems like an awfully high number. Just for shits and giggles (and because I'm excited I've learned how to ssh tonight....leave me alone! It's the little things! HAHA!) Here is the seek error rate of ada5;

Code:
7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x000f 074 060 030 Pre-fail Always - 25864029

Biggest baby steps you've ever seen! I'm 30, and been using linux exclusively for about 6 years... and I have honestly, NEVER ssh'd before. BUT... this is why I rebuilt my home network and have been trying to expand my knowledge. Now... I must figure out my NAS issues. lol

This is not always a sure bet that there is no issues.

This screenshot is of a healthy Seagate 6TB drive I own, it seems seagate drives are reporting smart data
a little bit differently than alot of other makers of hard disks.

The above output from HDD Guardian 0.6.2

Thank you for the screenshot. Looking at them currently side by side, there are differences, but nothing glaring. Aside from the number of "Head Flying Hours". But I'm not even really sure what that means.

Your HFH numbers are more just do to the fact the drive (yours) is older...

Well, not everyone here are IT professionals. @BigDave and I are both in construction. IIRC @BigDave is a plumbing and I'm a electrian. I'm not sure about him but I don't even touch a computer at work. Computers are just a hobby of mine.

So, don't feel bad. We all have to pick it up as we have the time.

Getting back to the original question, those errors might be due to problems communicating with the drives rather than problems with the drives themselves. What hardware are they connected to, and what version of FreeNAS are you running?

The seek error rates look ok. See: https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/opinion-new-hard-drive-with-smart-errors.12396/ for how to calculate the two numbers that are included.

The one drive has 1,572 seek errors out of 26,599,400 total seeks. As long as it's not going up too fast I wouldn't worry about it. I have a drive that had over 1,000 seek errors within the first few months of it's life. 2 years later I think it's only had one or two more.

The other drive has 69 seek errors out of 17,866,683 total seeks.

BigDave's drive has 0 seek errors out of 7,620,136 total seeks.

I'm not sure why they're triggering on the read smart failed errors. I think I saw a thread on something like this before though.
