I understand that if one were to incorporate a hotspare into their pool, it would have to be the same size as the other drives that made up the pool, so if i had 5x 4TB spinners as raidz, i'd have to have a 4TB drive as the hotspare..

my question is: does the drive designated as a hotspare have to be a mechanical drive like the other 5? or can one have the aforementioned 5x 4TB HDDs in raidz, with a 4TB SSD designated as a hotspare? so, if one of the hdd's dies, the ssd can pick up the slack until the dead drive is replaced.

Yes, you can have a SSD as a hot spare. It just needs to be at least the same amount of blocks as the smallest 4TB HDD.
