I have a disk that smart long test reported read error, the pool state is online, status: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error.
I read the documents, and there is a note:
A disk that is failing but has not completely failed can be replaced in place, without first removing it. Whether this is a good idea depends on the overall condition of the failing disk. A disk with a few newly-bad blocks that is otherwise functional can be left in place during the replacement to provide data redundancy. A drive that is experiencing continuous errors can actually slow down the replacement. In extreme cases, a disk with serious problems might spend so much time retrying failures that it could prevent the replacement resilvering from completing before another drive fails.

Is that mean I can put the new disk in another slot and just select replace without take the failed disk offline, or I should take the failed disk offline without removing, and then select replace disk?

Thanks!

If you have the available slot/connection, you can keep the old disk online for the replace operation and it will go faster.

and it will go faster.
Maybe. You'll also retain whatever redundancy you have with the dying disk until the new disk is resilvered into the pool.

So It's safe to do steps in "Replacing Disks to Grow a Pool" section in the documents?
  1. Connect the new, larger disk to the unused disk port or drive bay.
  2. Go to Storage ➞ Pools.
  3. Select the pool and click  (Settings) ➞ Status.
  4. Select one of the old, smaller disks in the pool. Click  (Options) ➞ Replace. Choose the new disk as the replacement.
