Hi:
I am running FreeNAS 9.10, I have 6 3T WD Red drives. I am getting the alert shown below. I wanted to run S.M.A.R.T test using SSH from the GUI. When I select Shell from the GUI and type: smartctl -t /dev/ada5 and I hit "enter" I do not get a response. I could run it from "Task", but I only want to run it once. How do I do it?
Code:
CRITICAL: April 27, 2018, 11:01 a.m. - Device: /dev/ada5, 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
CRITICAL: April 27, 2018, 11:01 a.m. - Device: /dev/ada5, 8 Offline uncorrectable sectors

Thank you.

For the short test you would run smartctl -t short /dev/ada5 for the long smartctl -t long /dev/ada5

Also if you run smartctl -a /dev/ada5 and post the output, some smart people on here can give you better advice.

I only wan to run it once.
You should be running regular short and long SMART tests as a matter of course anyway.

Shell
[root@freenas ~]# smartctl -t short /dev/ada5

This is a copy of my screen. When I hit enter on the keyboard, nothing happens.

The command returns immediately and the test runs in the background - to check the result run smartctl -a /dev/ada5 will show the test results near the bottom or smartctl -l selftest /dev/ada5 for just the test results.

Nothing except that you return to the shell prompt, right? That's exactly as expected. Somebody ought to write a resource about this subject.

Being a Seagate ST3000DM, I would replace the drive - it will most likely fail soon.

Run a long test as well and post the output in code tags.
