Hi there

Looking at adopting FreeNAS for my first NAS server. At this stage I have three hard drives, each 3TB which I have just set up into a ZFS volume.

I wonder if it is possible to add additional hard drives, one at a time (as finances permit) to the existing volume without losing the data?

Although I have extensive experience of Windows, I'm afraid I am a total newbie on any other OS.

TIA

The answer is generally no. Depending on the configuration, drives need to be added at least two at a time to expand and retain redundancy. This is covered in depth in the documentation and noobsauce80's FAQ. I suggest you explore both before you commit data to the array so you can make an informed decision.

(doing worst girly voice imitation ever): Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.
