iXsystems, an enterprise-class hardware solution provider and corporate sponsor of PC-BSD, announced today a redistribution agreement with Opera Software that will allow the next version of PC-BSD to have an option for the user to select Opera as the default web browser. Opera is a native FreeBSD web browser that was not previously available on PC-BSD as a default installation option.

With the addition of the Opera Web browser, PC-BSD provides a fast, robust, widely used and accepted browser for an enhanced user experience,” said Matt Olander, CTO of iXsystems. “This makes one less thing you need to download after installation to have a more usable system.

Opera offers advanced features for efficient and productive Web surfing, including integrated search, widgets, transfer manager, password manager, pop-up blocking, and tabbed browsing. Users also benefit from Opera’s robust security features, including new Fraud Protection, Opera’s unique anti-phishing technology. Opera’s built-in email client provides the user with a combined e-mail program, news reader, mailing list organizer and RSS/Atom newsfeed reader, while the IRC client enables worldwide chat and file sharing.

One of the great things about PC-BSD is that it is designed with the casual user in mind, but still has all the power and customization Linux users expect,” said Tatsuki Tomita, Executive Vice President Opera Mini and Desktop Business Unit, Opera Software. “We think Opera has similar characteristics. It’s great for casual Web browsing and comes loaded with advanced features to keep power users engaged and active.
