FreeNAS Mini Storage Appliance to form core of Digital Book Archive
iXsystems, an industry leader in Open Source enterprise server and storage solutions, recently agreed to donate two FreeNAS Mini network storage appliances to the Nzega Digital Library Initiative (NDLI).
The NDLI has received more than 15,000 digital books from international donors. The books will be incorporated into the first ever digital library in Nzega, and possibly the first general purpose digital library anywhere in Tanzania.
The FreeNAS Mini will play a critical role in creation of the book archive. In addition to its 16TB storage capacity, providing plenty of room for the library to grow, the Mini has a self-healing file system to protect information from data corruption and intelligent compression to make the most efficient use of every byte of space.
FreeNAS, the software that powers the Mini, is based on the open source FreeBSD operating systems and utilizes the advanced ZFS file system. FreeNAS is the most advanced market solution available in its class for reliably storing data.
Jordan Hubbard, iXsystems CTO, states, “We are pleased to supply the technology to support a project of such social and educational significance. Indeed, we hope that other tech companies follow suit in supporting NDLI’s initiative and other such worthy causes in developing countries.”
