iXsystems™ has released its first fully-qualified PC-BSD™ workstation series, the iX-Apollo Extreme. Every iX-Apollo Extreme workstation includes the latest version of PC-BSD, Galileo, pre-installed and pre-configured. PC-BSD provides stability, security, and an easy-to-use desktop experience, featuring the versatile KDE 4.2.2 desktop environment. PC-BSD exclusively features Push-Button Installers (PBIs), graphical utilities which easily install and remove software. Excellent computing power and graphics capabilities allow users to enjoy a fuller PC-BSD experience.

Features of the iX-Apollo Extreme series include:

  • Intel® Core™ i7 processors to deliver high-end performance.
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800 GT video cards, designed to save power and display intense graphics.
  • PC-BSD’s inherent virus and spyware resistance.
  • Support for up to eight logical cores of raw CPU processing power and up to 16 GB of triple channel DDR3 memory.
  • A chassis designed to absorb sound vibrations and create an ultra quiet environment.
  • A whisper quiet 500 watt 80PLUS® certified power supply for increased energy efficiency.

The iX-Apollo Extreme series was built with silence and energy efficiency in mind. The iX-Apollo Extreme features a whisper quiet power supply to keep the peace. This power supply’s energy efficiency is 80PLUS® certified. The HybridPower™ technology of the iX-Apollo’s NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800 GT video card saves energy during times of less intense video operations. The iX-Apollo series is every environmentally-friendly librarian’s dream.
“The workstation gets more than 15,000 frames per second with effects turned off, and sees around 300 fps in Half-Life 2 with video settings maxed out. This Intel® Core™ i7 configuration is the best desktop experience I’ve had so far.  I downloaded Valve’s Steam client and played Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source, and Left 4 Dead using PC-BSD.  I bought Half-Life 2 in 2004, but the Windows PC I had at the time could barely handle it. The load times alone made the game unplayable. Thanks to PC-BSD and some really nice hardware, I was finally able to enjoy the game the way it was intended,” says James T. Nixon III, Webmaster, iXsystems.
“Aside from the amazing gaming performance, the workstation deploys desktop effects beautifully.  It sits quietly next to my television serving as a PC-BSD ‘Media Center’, making couch-computing the ‘only’ way to go!  Whether you’re writing a white paper in OpenOffice, watching movies with VLC, or enjoying the HD Flash videos on Hulu.com, PC-BSD continues to prove that anything is possible with the right hardware,” says Ryan Hall, PC-BSD/iX-Apollo User.
