iXsystems has introduced a line of servers, the iX-Green Neutron, that represents the next generation in the “Earth” Series Line of environmentally friendly servers. iXsystems, located in booth 529, will unveil the iX-Green Neutron server line at OpenSource World™, Next Generation Data Center™, and CloudWorld™ 2009.
The iX-Green Neutron server line is optimized for high performance applications and provides the lowest power consumption on the market. The iX-Green Neutron series features the iX-GN1204, the iX-GN1208 and the iX-GN 2216 servers, which are engineered with optimum energy efficiency in mind while delivering enhanced speed, performance, and memory capacity. These servers utilize power-saving DDR3 memory, 2.5” SAS and/or SATA drives, and come equipped with high-efficiency (86-93%) power supplies, all designed to reduce operating expenses and data center costs without sacrificing performance. The iX-Green Neutron series also leverages Intel’s® Xeon® Processor 5500 Series to boost performance, speed, and energy-efficiency over previous generation processors, maximizing ROI by reducing total cost of ownership.

The iX-Green Neutron Series features three initial configurations, able to be tailored to a customer’s exact specifications. The focus of each configuration is to provide the highest performance levels possible, while using our knowledge of power saving technologies to exceed the demand for green data center technology while simultaneously saving our clients money on operating costs,” says Andrew Madrid, Product Marketing Manager, iXsystems, Inc. “The iX-Green Neutron servers showcase our progress to provide the most energy efficient solution with the lowest power consumption available on the market today.

Based on the latest Intel 5520 Chipset, the iX-Green Neutron servers raise performance standards while lowering power consumption thanks to the Intel® Xeon® 5500 processor series and the way it interacts with power-saving DDR3 memory. The 5520 chipset introduces Intel® QuickPath technology, which allows high-speed point-to-point links to swiftly navigate shared memory, distributed amongst the processors, greatly increasing efficiency and thereby cutting back on memory power utilization as well. DDR3 memory provides up to 1333 MHz performance speed while averaging 20-30% less power consumption than its FB-DDR2 predecessors at the same speed. In idles states, DDR3 actually consumes 50% less power than FB-DDR2 as well.
Intel® Xeon® 5500 processors are designed to consume less power, averaging power savings of 12% at peak performance and 47% while idle in comparison to the previous generation Xeon® 5300/5400 series. The Xeon® 5500 chips boost performance when systems need to operate at peak levels and idles cores and memory during low usage times to greatly cut power consumption when the systems are idle. With more and lower CPU power states, the Intel® Xeon® 5500 processors may intelligently select the unique state to operate in for the given workload, while drawing the minimum power necessary for that task. For maximum energy savings, the Intel® Xeon® 5500 processor series also includes the low voltage L5520 and L5506 processors, designed to offer even lower power consumption, running at 60 watts of power instead of the typical 80 or 95 watts used by the rest of the Xeon® series chips.
The iX-GN1204 1U configuration features 4 physical cores (8 virtual cores with Hyper-Threading enabled), up to 24GB of low voltage RAM, and 4 hot-swap 2.5” SAS/SATA drives. The iX-GN1208 1U configuration features up to 8 cores (16 virtual cores with Hyper-Threading enabled), up to 96 GB of low voltage RAM, and 8 hot-swap 2.5” SAS/SATA drives. The iX-GN2216 2U server provides up to 8 cores (16 virtual cores with Hyper-Threading), 144GB of low voltage RAM, and 16 hot-swap 2.5” SAS/SATA hard drive bays in an efficient 2U form factor designed for the most frequently encountered applications. The chassis is also equipped with a redundant 700W 1+1 hotswap redundant high efficiency power supply (Gold level 91%+ Power Efficiency) for outstanding power savings, and fault tolerance.
