iXsystems announced today the release of PC-BSD Version 1.3. PC-BSD is a fully-functional desktop operating system running FreeBSD version 6.1. Its PBI system, developed exclusively for PC-BSD, lets users download and install their applications in a self-extracting and installing format.
This release features a new PC-BSD Install Wizard, a new look and feel for default PC-BSD, and an updated base system running KDE 3.5.5. Other features include an updated version of HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) for hardware access and a new package in the PC-BSD PBI repository to easily install and integrate Adobe Flash with popular internet browsers.
Version 1.3 of PC-BSD is earning rave reviews from the system administrator community. The new install wizard includes several new options, including advanced setup configuration. According to Dru Lavigne, system administrator and O’Reilly author, “If you’ve been hesitant to try out a BSD for fear of the installer, this version may just turn you into a convert.”
PC-BSD has long been the operating system of choice for many due to its stability and ease of use. According to Henry Gillow-Wiles, IT Director for a non-profit community center, “After looking at several Linux distributions and finding them lacking in either speed, ease of use, or ease of management, I tried PC-BSD. This OS installed quickly and ran well on all but the most limited Pentium I equipment…It has also been stable, with few unexpected system freezes or crashes.”
