ZFS config and rebuild times

HI All,

I'm after some advice on how best to configure a 24x 12TB pool of disk with 2x 800GB SSDs. Ideally we'd do mirrors but this doesn't give us enough storage so we're looking at a RAIDZ3 option with spares.

Under consideration are a 3x vdev of 8 disks (144TB raw) or a 2x vdev of 12 disks (192TB raw). The disks have an URE of 10^15 so we're concerned about rebuild times and the chance of another disk failure during this. I'm still trying to work on numbers to figure out just how bad this could be. Yes, we'll have backups but ideally you'd like a system that didn't die trying to mend itself.

I understand recordsize is also important and that from a storage efficiency point the 2x vdev option might be better and possibly more performant as a result of reduced read/write overheads. Again, that's a 'hand grab at air' kinda feeling rather than anything bases on concrete evidence.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Apologies if the details are lacking.

Thanks,
Fab
