Hello,

After upgrading to nightly builds, I'm finally able to use the GUI and see changes reflected. So far, so good.

But, even when enabling Guest access, I cannot enter the shared folder. I can see it, and that's about it.

The wizard created user account and user group devvi_000 (my Windows 10 user account gives this name in c:\users\-folder. The full name is devvienuis@email.provider ;)

I tried connecting but it just fails. Any ideas what I could do? I enter my username "devvi_000" and the Windows 10 password (same as on FreeNAS). But nothing :(

On console I see the following text appear whenever I try to enter the share:
smbd[12345]: matchname failed on IP

and also a general warning: ntpd plugin: ntpd_do_query returned unexpected data (ik=0x0; ik_num=0; ik_size=0)

Any ideas what I'm overlooking? Surely it can't be this complicated :)

Correction: I solved my last question by entering "\devvi_000" as my username. So far so good, until I try to create a folder in this share. Then I get: destination folder access denied - you need permissions to perform this action r (try again). Remember, share name folder is "R".

So what do I do next? I've set the flag "Set permission recursively" in the folder properties once more, but that doesn't do anything for me either. Guest access is still on.

Sigh :)

If you are having problems, don't even think of running the "nightlies". Please use the stable version.

For usernames, try devvienuis or devvi_000

Many of use use Firefox or one of it's derivatives.

I'll give Firefox another chance too :) Problem remaining: only read rights on my Windows share; I cannot add or edit anything: permission denied. I double checked the user permissions on FreeNAS: all seems well (configured with the GUI of nightly build).

Why on Earth would anyone use those stupid account names on the server?

If you want automagic logins, Windows can store your credentials, unless it's the same username but a different password.

So just use human-readable usernames on the server, then login with those credentials and have Windows store them.

I don't understand? I don't chose the username, Windows 10 does after you upgrade to 'cloud' account. Nothing I can change there: auto-made with first part of your email address...

I know I can let Windows save the credentials when I connect to a network share. That's not my problem. Problem is getting write access :/

I'll do a fresh install once more, and post some more info I think that might be relevant...

Thanks!

PS: addition for my other thread, now closed: https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...ldnt-volumes-remain-intact.41636/#post-267141

It might give some answers for others trying to help me on this topic :)

My answer to locked discussion: Well, they ARE fixing things at my end, them nightly builds. Who are you to tell me it isn't???? You don't even know what the problem is, yet you are certain that NOTHING in the minimal code changes effectively solved some bugs. And others are telling me I'm the *devil* by running nightly build... So what is it, you guys??

I'm not refusing anything, I had my question answered for now and I just gave the extra details to keep you guys calm and explain a bit more. Now stop bugging about them 'missing' hardware specs!!!! I'll post it once it becomes relevant!

And telling you guys what I'm really doing... 'really'?? For real?? Like I said; fresh installs every time again. I have done nothing but creating windows shares, volumes, folder & users for the file sharing. Which all failed with 9.3.1 stable. Only 9.3.1 nightly would work like I was told in them manuals.

Don't shoot the messenger or ridicule her if your fav software ain't working as it should for someone. I stay nice, you could do the same.

Sigh.

I've got 3 systems of various performance, and I'm not experiencing anything like you are, sorry. And on my test system, I've re-installed a bunch of times and the pool imported fine.

So maybe it's bad installation media, or maybe it's hw related.

:) maybe, that's why I'm testing and asking preliminary questions to rule out other problems and pin-point what's really going on. Maybe hardware. I don't think so, but we'll see. First a fresh installation once more (9.3 Stable --> 9.3.1 --> Nightly).

I'll record my sessions so everyone can see how I'm abusing my FreeNAS ;p I'll walk through all steps, coming back to the original question here: windows network share ain't working :)

For now; 1 volume set with 1 empty folder. We'll see what remains after a new fresh install. And I'll even use FF ;p

Well I will be d****d. Did what I have been doing for 2 nights and now no problem in any of the browsers; initial wizard shows 1 found volume just as I expected it 2 nights ago :)

I really do not get it, but it gives hope for the next steps... I should have recorded all my steps sooner XD

I will edit in whatever I find next. Thanks!

CORRECTION: all is wrong after all ;p

First thing I encountered was that, while I set root pwd during setup of 9.3, that password never is correct when I try it with the web interface. I'll always have to go to the console setup and Reset Root Password. Must be me? :)

Well, next steps... See attachment / link: it's rather long with screenshots but this is the what you see:
3 browsers. I start the wizard on all of them and click through it. See the differences for each browser? One comes with format dialogue, the other says it imports just fine and yet another shows nothing. When it looks like I successfully went through all the steps of the wizard (when possible), my data set isn't imported after all...

So maybe it's time for my hardware set? ;p

1x legacy sata disk for OS
3x 3TB NAS disks for data; JBOD hardware enabled in SAS BIOS for all 3 disks
Build FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201512121950
Platform Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz
Memory 24509MB
Supermicro X8DA3 met Xeon (dual board; 2nd processor on the way)
81Y4448 / FRU 46C8928 - IBM ServeRAID M1115 SAS/SATA Controller (LSI SAS9223-8i)

So... What am I doing wrong? ;p

Thank you for providing your hardware info.

You need to flash your M1115 controller to IT mode with Phase 20 firmware.

Another suggestion would be to do an install without using the wizard. It might take longer, but it might work better for you in the long run.

This was happening to me as well. I just chalked it up to wierdness on my KVM. I started skipping the CLI password during the wizard and just chosing one later.

3 browsers. I start the wizard on all of them and click through it.
You aren't going through the wizard on 3 different browsers all at the same time are you?

By the way, after you flash your HBA, please do a fresh install with the Stable version.

Yes, all at the same time but finalizing nothing... It just shows the steps before actually implementing it. And the wizards all work differently depending on the browser I use. And no, this is not happening just now because I parallel click ;p

I'll do a Phase 20 firmware search tomorrow. I don't see it solve anything, but what do I know :)

The wizard wasn't the only thing I had problems with. Pretty much everything with the GUI failed at one point or another :/

I think I have an MP4 in a moment, without any of my passwords XD

Devvie

MP4 ready; horrible to watch. I'll redo my work better. Now it's bedtime :)

You don't have any data on these drives, right? Because when you go from JBOD to IT, bad ju-ju can happen to the data.

btw, if you are using this version, you might be running into this bug - https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/cannot-connect-to-1-out-of-2-cifs-shares.40121/ If so, use the information in the thread to resolve your problem.

When you do the next install, start with the latest stable version - http://download.freenas.org/9.3.1/latest/x64/ While it doesn't appear to fix the issue above, it does incorporate other fixes since Dec 12th.

Build FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201512121950

The users who have been trying to help you today are volunteers. We have no affiliation with iXsystems. If the tables were turned, how would you feel?

Don't shoot the messenger

While you still may not understand the ramifications of not flashing your HBA to IT mode, you might thank us later on.

:) thanks, on it. Video is recompiling: I'll post it for posterity reasons?

Link: 6 minutes of your life you'll never get back: https://youtu.be/XP6u15Oy7BY . What this video basically shows is that, while re-creating my "R"-share folder in the wizard gives an error that the "R" folder already exists, nothing in the GUI lets me see the actual volumes. I just confirmed this with another fresh upgrade of 9.3 Stable, with first an update to nightly.

I'll now burn 9.3.1 Stable and go look for those flashing instructions. Though for me it really looks like a GUI problem (combined with the other problems I had). We'll see... I now tested with Internet Explorer and FF.

Ok, did a quick test with a fresh 9.3.1 stable installation. This time, the GUIs were consistent across browsers (yeay!). Yet creating share still fails (folder exists), while volume manager shows no volumes nor can it import anything. So time for the firmware IT mode update to P20 (https://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=migr-5082826), right? Till repost :)

Link to 9.3.1 installation video (FF/IE/Chrome/Opera): https://youtu.be/DSF6ZhktEi0 (another 10 minutes lost)

PS: still the root password given at setup won't work when you do first time browser login... ;p

I can't check the link - but that's probably not the URL. Search the forum for information on flashing your HBA in IT mode.

Did you read the link I sent you. It looks like there's a bug with the wizard that creates a broken share. The URL gives you are a workaround.

Hmmm... Flashing the M1115 ain't gonna be as easy as hoped :/

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/m1015-vs-m1115.15799/#post-123102

Reading... And concluding this is way to complicated.

So let me try with some Googling...

https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/lsi-p20-firmware-driver-issues.38178/#post-249133 for 9211-8i_Package_P20_IR_IT_Firmware_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows (but:
Installer_P20_for_MSDOS_and_Windows Windows Installer Version: 20.00.00.00 File Size: 588 KB has a serious bug: don't use the firmware ending on ~00.00.00).

I'll edit what I find next.

Edit:
I was hoping to create a bootable ISO image for all to download and spare them form making a bootable DOS disk. Sadly, because of the max size of 360kB (FAT12) for fdboot.img, I could not get a bootable CD where you could also find all files needed for flashing. I know from experience I'll probably fail creating a bootable ISO from my bootable USB drive, so I did not even try that. So nothing to download from me. I followed the instructions here: http://www.z80.eu/freedoscd.html which gave this adjusted file here: https://app.box.com/s/50avgje8juq7e7rqt5ofohsiwsqph367 .

Luckily, the USB route is real simple :)

INSTRUCTIONS: HOW TO FLASH NEW FIRMWARE FOR IBM M1115 SAS/SATA CONTROLLER TO LSI IT MODE

Download http://rufus.akeo.ie/

Use Rufus to create FreeDOS bootable USB drive.
This gives an almost empty FreeDOS 1.0 bootable USB drive.

Copy the following SAS folder to the USB drive: https://app.box.com/s/qvt5uvq8hfiwodw6bs5919p24k7mcy45
(instructions from: https://www.syxin.com/2014/03/crossflashing-an-ibm-m1115-raid-controller-to-lsi-firmware/)

Shut down your FreeNAS server and pull out your IBM SAS card. "Turn machine off, and grab the SAS address of the card, it’s on the back on a sticker (ie 500605B0xxxxxxxx)". Write the number down, plug the SAS card back in and boot the server from your new FreeDOS bootable USB drive.

Now the tricky part...
IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A WAY TO *backup* THE ORIGINAL FIRMWARE, DO LET ME/US KNOW? I did find the original firmwares here, so I suppose going back ain't gonna be difficult https://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=migr-5082826 (mirror: https://app.box.com/s/kczrw5nqmfj802minmelel8d56en42xa)

Adjusted FROM: https://www.syxin.com/2014/03/crossflashing-an-ibm-m1115-raid-controller-to-lsi-firmware/

In the dos prompt, go to SAS folder with
cd SAS

To flash the IBM M1115 to an LSI9211-IT mode
Type in the following exactly in the DOS prompt:
megarec -writesbr 0 sbrempty.bin
megarec -cleanflash 0
<your original firmware is gone>
<reboot, back to USB stick>

cd SAS
sas2flsh -o -f 2118ir.bin -b mptsas2.rom
sas2flsh -o -sasadd 500605b0xxxxxxxx
<x=numbers for SAS address on the sticker; you wrote this down>
<your now have a firmware again; nothing to configure there - it's IT mode!>
<reboot to FreeNAS>

Done!

NOW time to get back to my original problems: file sharing and GUI problems across browsers :)
