i have been reading alot of things on the forum about ECC memory and ZFS1,2,3. im going to go with an ECC build considering i want it to be a storage bank for my FTP camera feeds music/movies/pictures/files/software and maybe have 4 or 5 users with WAN access. Before i make my mind can someone give me some suggestion in favor or against my choices. i want to avoid having to return/send back components over and over.

CPU i3 6300 skylake
MOBO super micro X11SSMM-f (not sure if theres another LGA1151 option out there)
16G of RAM what ever is on the QVL( if anyone has some suggestions) is it ok to go by the tested memory chart on supermicro website and just order whats on there?
4-6 500G or 1TBdrives not sure how much space im going to go with yet.
PSU ~700 watt raidmax
case fractal node.

As for the RAM, you could check out Kingston's and Crucial's websites for their memory compatibility and buy direct from them, they have a vested interest in making sure their RAM works.

Buy a Proliant ML10 for under $200, an 8 GB stick of RAM, and a pair of 2 TB (or, better, 4 TB) drives.

i was looking at the proliant ml10 as an option. now what happens if something component wise needs to be replaced in that old server? can replacement parts be found? i guess you could just buy a new one.
Embedded Smart Array B110i SATA RAID Controller would need to be disabled for zfs right?

this option would save me some money. im going to guess this old server is probably loud as a jet!

also, would i need to buy a compatible NIC?

What "old server"? The $200 (actually, $169 today) price is for a brand new, current-generation server. I believe it has an onboard Intel NIC. @gpsguy has one; he can give some input on noise levels, but I wouldn't expect it's very loud.

and what about the hardware raid controller can i and should i disable it?

also, if thats the price for a new one then why are so many people hunting for compatible hardware to build one

There isn't a true hardware RAID controller; it's onboard FakeRAID that really is done by OS-level drivers. You should be able to disable it in the BIOS.

Be aware, the only connection for a monitor is using DisplayPort; you'll probably need an adapter to use your existing monitor. There are a couple of other threads here where people are using these machines, and give pointers to adapters that work.

Yes, it has an Intel NIC. It makes a little noise for a few minutes on boot up, but after that it's almost silent.

Ouch - looks like today's price is about $440 after a $30 instant coupon.

I bought mine from TigerDerect back in March for ~$199. Since then it's bounced around in price from $169-199. I *thought* I received an ad from them this week - showing it at the $169 price point.

I would wait - my guess is that it will go back on sale real soon now.

when you go to the wesite you can see there advertising it for 179.00 but when you click on it and go to shopping cart it rings up as 46X.00 with 5$ shipping.

i actually called them out on advertising it for 179 and told them i want it for that, they figure they can get me on the shipping.... at least i only had to pay 224 for it. i didnt catch it yesterday but i was pissed when i woke up the next day to order it and seen it at 4XX

I would call them ASAP. It's now back to $169 with $5 shippinh plus tax. At least in my cart.
