Will it FreeNAS - consumer hardware survey

In all honesty i havent looked into ssh tunnel etc, at the moment it is switched on and off as i need it. i use a vpn to connect to my home network and then turn it on. I guess i shoudl be looking at sftp?

I'm not sure of the differences other than one has the data encrypted over the net. Would i need that if i am just uploading things like pictures etc?

There's also the whole "my server was pwned by 15 different groups in two hours" aspect to exposing less-than hardened services to the internet.

True, so i presume SFTP would make this more secure (sorry for highjacking the thread)
