Use of FreeNAS for over internet media steaming

Hi I'm a college student who is looking to set up a server to stream media from my house to college. I would like to be able to fix it while at college if something goes wrong and was wondering if FreeNAS was a good option as I read that leaving it open to the internet was a bad idea. I also was unsure how to do this however I do have experience with networking and have run a small server before. Any help or information would be appreciated

Plex or Emby would handle the media streaming for you. As for working on it remotely, set up a VPN server (in freenas or on router), and connect remotely with that.
