Hi all,

I've just done an update (got email for it yesterday) to my NAS and, well, it did not go well :(

I did the update, it did what it needed to and rebooted.
It then hung on a screen saying something about "not installed, installing for i386"
It sat there for ever. Nothing was happening for 15ish minutes.
I pressed the power button, it seemed to do a graceful shutdown. Said syncing disks etc.
I boot again and I get the following:

Hoping there is a way to fix this? I really really don't feel like rebuilding it. Again.
This is the 3rd update where I have had a broken install after :( What's going on with the releases?

I've tried using the last boot option, same thing.

It's on an HP microserver gen 8, core i3, 16GB ram.

Thanks

Crispin

It sounds like your boot media is broken (especially if this keeps happening). You could install the latest version to a new stick and restore your config.

Looks like broken boot media. Get a SSD if you want better reliability.

Busy installing new USB stick now.
Hopefully it's an early night :)

It might not hurt to start suggesting a reboot before an update for users that are booting from USB drives. It might help to rule out one hurdle before an update especially with the track record that USB drives have.

It's alive [cue evil laugh]

I installed new copy, mounted the old sd card and recovered the config file. Uploaded it and it did tyre trick. Very relieved.

Lessons:
  • ensure you a cron backing up your config.
  • Look at moving to ssd.
  • Don't upgrade at 11pm
Not convinced of the corruption though. I have a monthly scrub on it which ran a few days ago. nothing reported. I. Mounted it now and did a scrub - same good result.

The sd card, 64gb San disk (not fake) is around 6 months old.

SD cards are not reliable at all, but then again, USB Flash drives are not much better. As previously suggested, a cheap SSD (if you have the SATA port) would solve this issue for the future.

I simply save a copy of my configuration before making ANY change
to my server.
