I'm running, FreeNAS-8.3.0-RELEASE-p1-x64 (r12825). I have four disk raidz1 configuration:

Code:
  pool: vol1
state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
entire pool from backup.
see: http://www.sun.com/msg/ZFS-8000-8A
scan: scrub repaired 0 in 23h9m with 1 errors on Fri Oct 17 14:10:02 2014
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
vol1 ONLINE 0 0 2
raidz1-0 ONLINE 0 0 4

A few days ago I noticed this in my console:

Code:
Oct 14 18:14:48 freenas smartd[2241]: Device: /dev/ada0, 24 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Oct 14 18:14:48 freenas smartd[2241]: Device: /dev/ada0, 24 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Oct 14 18:14:48 freenas smartd[2241]: Device: /dev/ada2, 24 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Oct 14 18:14:48 freenas smartd[2241]: Device: /dev/ada2, 24 Offline uncorrectable sectors

So I ordered two disks to replace the failing ones one at a time. I did that, starting with ada0, however after resilver was complete I got data corruption:

Code:
[root@freenas] ~# zpool status -v
pool: vol1
state: ONLINE
status: One or more devices has experienced an error resulting in data
corruption. Applications may be affected.
action: Restore the file in question if possible. Otherwise restore the
entire pool from backup.
see: http://www.sun.com/msg/ZFS-8000-8A
scan: resilvered 2.25T in 27h51m with 1 errors on Tue Oct 14 22:10:59 2014
config:

NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM
vol1 ONLINE 0 0 1

gptid/260cd97a-df9e-11e1-9963-c860009da3f8 ONLINE 0 0 0

errors: Permanent errors have been detected in the following files:

vol1@auto-20140830.0102-6m:/home/user/file.pdf

That's an old file in an old snapshot I no longer need, I tried deleting the snapshot but after scrubbing same error showed up for the next snapshot: vol1@auto-20140831.0102-6m. I can't offline ada2 anylonger to replace it, as I think I've got metadata corruption and zfs doesn't know how to rebuild anymore.

What are my options at this point? Is there any way not to have to back everything up, destroy the pool, replace ada2, and recreate the pool?

Here's smartctl for the drive in question btw, it's still screaming into syslog...

Your only good option is to backup your data, destroy your pool, then restore from backup. This is a prime example of why we don't recommend RAIDZ1 and basically admonish anyone that uses it.

You might be able to get away with deleting all of the snapshots that have that file, but I personally would never trust that pool ever again.

cyberjock: Thanks, for the advice. I tried deleting all snapshots prior to the one that was being reported as corrupt, and scrubbing. Same thing, the error came up in the next snapshot. I've no clue how to figure out when the file was actually deleted to identify the last snapshot it's contained in.
I guess I'll have to do this the "hard" way, but as you said this is the best solution, it will allow me to get rid of raidz1 alltogether and use raidz2 I guess.

Thanks!
