Hi All,

I've got 4 new drives and new to free NAS, one of the drives has coming as failing. The drives are not in the in database and the smartctl for the failing drive is -

7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x000b 028 028 050 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 0

Seek error rate is bellow threashold and failing now, while never a good sign this attribute can sometimes go back to normal, if you haven't yet you should run an extended SMART test.

Do you have a backup drive in the event you need to replace it? And do you have backups of your data?

Do you have a backup drive in the event you need to replace it? And do you have backups of your data?

It's a brand new build, everything is on a QNAP NAS - I did the first copy of data and got this / these errors.

So yes, the data is not critical and exists somewhere else, so I'd rather get to the bottom of things whilst this system is not live.

Definitely use the disk burn-in script described here
...or alternatively the method described in Uncle Fester's guide (link in my sig).

So I've got a replacement drive and it's failing with exactly the same error, I've swapped the cable it was connected to (to an LSI compatible raid controller in JBOD mode) and the seek errors keep increasing on the new drive.

I'll do the burn in script on the drive.

What is the controller? Did you swap ports on it, or just the cable?

It's a fujitsu branded LSI controller, swapped it with a known good cable i.e. connecting to a disk that works fine and the fault followed the disk. Just dug out an adaptec HBA so I'm going to give that a go.

@faxfan2002 looking at the output for d2, when was the last time you ran a test on that drive? Am I crazy that one would expect the section below to report some tests?

Code:
SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1
No self-tests have been logged. [To run self-tests, use: smartctl -t]

So I've got a replacement drive and it's failing with exactly the same error,

That seems odd, as it's not a very usual error and certainly not cable/controller related, please post a complete SMART report for the new disk
Code:
smartctl -x /dev/daX
