In 8.0.1-RC1 I destroyed a zfs volume by accident and I was able to recover it with
"zfs import -D tank1" luckily.

With 8.0.1 I destroyed a zfs volume and I went to "auto import" in the GUI and didn't work;
I went to "manual import" and tried to install it and the GUI could not find the destroyed volume;
I tried to go to the command line and "zfs import -D tank1" and no luck;
I tried to "zfs import -DF tank1" and no luck.

It looks like the GUI really destroys the volume for ever at this point.

Is this a good thing? I like the ability have a way to restore the destroyed volume.

I seem to remember that the GUI actually doesn't destroy the volume at all anymore, but just removes it from the database. Have you tried zpool status to see if it's maybe simply there in the CLI ?

Durk is right, I remember seeing a ticket or something where destroying just did a 'soft' delete and your pool could still be re-imported. I think there is also a checkbox for wiping the data you would need to re-import. You could also try 'gpart show' and see what kind of partition info is still lingering on your disks.
