Hi All,

In the next 3 years, my PC will pretty much become obsolete due to windows 11 compatibility. I am looking to build a server out of the hardware so not to waste it.

Spec:
Motherboard Asus Z270E Gaming
CPU Intel i5 7600K
16GB (2x 8GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz memory.

Would these components be ok to use? It will be a general file server and Plex server.

Many Thanks,
Mike.

You should have no problem running TrueNAS. You might want to add some RAM. Many people recommend ECC RAM which your board will not support so you have a small risk of a RAM error propagating to disk. Just run nightly or weekly scrubs.

Thanks for your reply, Morris. I have read from many sites that ECC RAM is not so important for a home file server?

I'm not using ECC RAM. The way memory is interleaved I can't see the server staying up if there is a RAM problem and I also run data scrubs to be safe. I follow best practices, multiple copies of anything critical in different places
