Hey guys,
I'm using the SATA ports on my Supermicro board right now. I've been getting errors like

Code:
Device: /dev/ada4, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
Device: /dev/ada4, Self-Test Log error count increased from 6 to 7
Device: /dev/ada2, ATA error count increased from 10 to 15
Device: /dev/ada2, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

ever since I upgraded my system to a 6 drive system a few months ago. It was running on 5 drives before.
AFAIK this problem doesn't have to be drive related, but could also be controller/cable related.
Therefore I decided to buy an IBM M1115 controller and miniSAS to SATA cables.

Now my question:
Do I have to unmount/mount the drives anywhere in the FreeNAS UI or via command line in order to perform the upgrade or can I simply shut the system down, pull the cables out of the motherboard, and plug them into the IBM controller?
This is assuming I've already flashed the controller to IT firmware.

Regards, bobb

No need to do anything besides swapping the drives ;)

And this drive has one pending sector which means you should keep an eye on it. Are the SMART tests correctly configured?

This implies repeated SMART test failures. Please post (between CODE tags) the output of smartctl -x for the drive.

I'm out of town until Thursday, so this will have to wait a few days. But thanks in advance!

Thank you for helping me! Here's the output:

ada2 has never had a SMART test, but has one pending reallocation. Fix your SMART test schedule and keep a close eye on it.

ada4 started failing SMART tests about 2 months ago. If it's still under warranty (it should be), you have grounds for an RMA. Some people prefer to try to force reallocation of bad sectors. If you want to try this, one approach is to remove it and run badblocks destructive write test on it.

I have swapped ada4 earlier this month. I also dropped the M1115 into my rig. Resilvering completed without any errors, and after I installed the M1115, the FreeNAS GUI and E-Mail errors also went away. I did adjust the SMART test schedule after replacing ada4 and installing the HBA.
Now it looks like ada2 (now called da3 since I replaced the HBA) just failed a few hours ago. Guess it's time for another RMA.
