Recover deleted files

What is the best way to recover (accidentally) deleted files? If there is a way at all.

ZFS snapshots. If you haven't set them up, then they're not running, and thus not protecting your files. Definitely read up on them before trying to blindly implement them. Here's a good place to start.

1. Restore from backups. Oh, you didn't have backups? Ok.. Goto next
2. Restore from snapshot. Oh, you didn't have snapshots on? Ok.. Goto next
3. Are you using CIFS? Did you enable that "Export recycle bin" option for your file share? If you didn't..Goto next

There isn't any way to recover your deleted data.

If I could be so bold, if you are asking how to recover a deleted file and you couldn't recover from backup you have sorely mistaken how important backups are.

Thanks a lot. I do have backups,..but sometimes its good to know how to do it anyway :)

Recovering deleted files on ZFS is next to impossible without intimate knowledge of ZFS source code, file structures, and a whole lot of time and luck.
