Hello,
I'm a new to FreeNAS, and I currently have a nice setup with a few jails.
The problem is that I screwed up some of the services like CIFS and FTP (so some very important features for a NAS).
Now I would like to re-install my server, but I do want to keep the files, and jails (the jails work perfect, and took a very long time to setup correctly).
Is this possible, and if so how (and is it recommended to do so)?

If you plan to reinstall FreeNAS you'll lose the jails unless you plan to restore your config file. Of course, if you are restoring your config file your CIFS/FTP problems will be back. ;)

I don't have access to a FreeNAS box right now to test this. I believe FreeNAS uses warden from PCBSD to handle jail management. See warden documentation here: http://wiki.pcbsd.org/index.php/Warden®/9.2#Using_the_Command_Line_Version_of_Warden.C2.AE

See import and export commands. Note that this is definitely unsupported and you may end up breaking jails on our system. When I have a chance I will poke around the GUI. This would be a great feature request.

Edit: A bit of googling and realized it's already a feature request here: https://bugs.freenas.org/issues/3473
