Please help advise me on my situation. Im currently in progress of moving to truenas. Already have three 4tb hdd which isnt used. But i have another one from my old synology nas which is also anoth 1 unit of 4tb. How should i setup the pools so that i can transfer the files from my synology the. Expand the pools to achieve the most hdd space. Should i go with 3 hdd in raidz1 and then hold back until i can buy another two units then add it? My raid controller can hold upto 6 hdd.

Using a RAID controller isn't recommended. You should replace it with an HBA.

Also, RAIDZ* VDEV's aren't expandable after creation. If you have 3 drives currently, with a 4th available later, you may want to go with a single 2-drive mirror VDEV to start, and then add another 2-drive mirror VDEV later on.
