Hello,

I have 8x2TB hard drives which I have setup in RAIDZ2. According to this calculator I should have 10.9TB usable however I only have 6.9TB available
http://www.servethehome.com/raid-calculator/

From what I was reading RAIDZ2 works best with 6 or 10 drives.

My question is if I go from 8 to 10 drives will I gain the lost space back? According to the calculator listed above with 10 drives I should have 14.6 TB usable.

Second question if in fact going to 10 drives would fix my missing space issue, can I expand the volume or would it have to be reacreated?

Thanks in advance.

No, you need to figure out where the missing space is before you go throwing more drives in. Post the output of zpool status in pastebin.

So I guess it created 2 RAIDz2 with 4 disks each rather than 1 large one. Guess that makes sense as to where the space went. I jsut used the ZFS Volume Manager and added all available disk without much though. I shall see if I can recreate it as 8x1 rather than 4x2

Thanks

Exactly right. Make it one big vdev and everything will be fine.
