Hi All,

I have an old dell PC, A Dell T3400 that shipped with an Intel core 2 quad Q6700 and 4 gigs and of ECC RAM. Through research I know I can upgrade this desktop up to 16 gigs of memory, however, the Q6700 doesn't support ECC Ram from what I can tell.

Here in lies my confusion, would dell ship a workstation with ecc ram knowing that the ECC would be useless or am I missing something?

It's about the Chipset with those old CPUs. The CPU doesn't handle the memory interconnect with Socket 775, which is one of the reasons we don't recommend hardware from that era. It's slow and inefficient compared to systems which are 8 years younger.

I wouldn't buy new unbuffered ECC RAM for that. A new system isn't all that expensive and DDR2 ECC UDIMMs are expensive + not well available. Here's an example for a new build, below $500 but with a Xeon E3-1225 v3 and 16-20GB RAM (if you want to use the included 4GB stick).
