I got two alerts today that indicate a drive is failing

Code:
Device: /dev/sdaa [SAT], 1 Offline uncorrectable sectors.
2023-08-25 05:35:12 (America/New_York)

Code:
Device: /dev/sdaa [SAT], 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
2023-08-25 05:35:12 (America/New_York)

Smartctl shows 5 sectors

I know the drive needs replaced, my question is, why does zpool status show everything as healthy and both of my spares as available?
Because, apparently, no reads/writes have hit any of the failing sectors. This is a perfectly normal situation.
What is the best way to go about replacing this drive?
According to the docs.

Two things at odds:
Code:
1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate POSR-- 084 064 044 - 232741880
9 Power_On_Hours -O--CK 100 100 000 - 186

Why is that? They are Manufacturer recertified Seagate Exos drives so I assume SMART data was wiped to some extent.

You have provided very limited data in order to give you a proper diagnosis however if you provide the entire output of smartctl -x /dev/sdaa then we can provide a conclusive answer.

Have you run a SMART Long test? I would recommend you do that.

Based on the information you provided @WI_Hedgehog hit the nail on the head. The drive has very few power_on_hours, the load_cycle_count is also very low. And you can ignore ID 1 and ID 7, this is a unique coding by Seagate, you actually have zero errors.
I know the drive needs replaced
Does it? I don't know that. I guess if you purchased a used drive from an unreputable source then maybe the drive statistics could have been erased, or the manufacturer did. But I'd think it was still in warranty and if so, then I'd replace it. If there is no warranty remaining, run a SMART Long Test and post the smartctl -x data after it's completed. You may redact the drive serial number if you desire. Some people are a little sensitive to that.

Also, Current Pending Sector Error means that a sector was having problems reading the data but it eventually did read the data. If it was unable to read the data at all, then it would be reflected in ID 5 as a Reallocated Sector.

I have a SMART long test running that I started after the error came in. The last one that ran was a week ago, right after I installed the drive along with 35 others. I'll post the full output once it completes.

Do you know if the drives are under warranty? If yes, hopefully you can get an RMA going. I know refurbished drives hold a very small warranty normally. For any other refurbished drives, I'd recommend you burn them in if you haven't already. It may save you some grief.

There's a two year warranty from the seller where I bought them, not through the manufacturer according to their website. I checked the serial with Seagate anyways and it shows under warranty until December. I already contacted the seller about the offline uncorrectables, waiting to hear back from them but don't expect a response until Monday. I assumed since TrueNAS threw the red/critical error that the drive was bad. Not sure why it throws a critical error if it's not critical enough for it to automatically offline the drive and start a resilver with the hotspare.

I can't answer that either, however Pending Sector Errors is not critical in my book, it's a warning to keep an eye on the drive. When ID 5 Reallocated Sectors starts to increment, that is critical to me because it shows that a portion of the drive was not readable. When drives are manufactured, some sectors are mapped out because they are unreadable, but the manufacturer then zero's out the SMART values. They do not expect any further media problems but it happens.

Replace your drive ! It has failed. @danb35 is of course correct, this is a hard failure and there is no getting around this. This is why I asked for a SMART Long test.

My advice, run a SAMRT Long Test on any of your refurbished drives once a week and a daily SMART Short Test. Actually that is what I advice people anyway but you might not do that. Keep an eye on those other drives, ensure you know when the warranty expires.

I tend to watch the decoded data:
Device: /dev/sdaa [SAT], 1 Offline uncorrectable sectors.
2023-08-25 05:35:12 (America/New_York)
Device: /dev/sdaa [SAT], 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
2023-08-25 05:35:12 (America/New_York)
(an unreadable sector is concerning, but it happens; more failures in frequent succession is an issue)

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAGS VALUE WORST THRESH FAIL RAW_VALUE
1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate POSR-- 084 064 044 - 232741880
This is concerning, it should be at 100, it's at 84, 44 is EOL. This I'd concern myself with if it gets worse.

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct PO--CK 100 100 010 - 0
7 Seek_Error_Rate POSR-- 072 060 045 - 15623910
That's also not good (72, should be 100).

194 Temperature_Celsius -O---K 037 043 000 - 37 (0 24 0 0 0)
197 Current_Pending_Sector -O--C- 100 100 000 - 5
198 Offline_Uncorrectable ----C- 100 100 000 - 5
199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count -OSRCK 200 200 000 - 0

241 Total_LBAs_Written ------ 100 253 000 - 4114527832
242 Total_LBAs_Read ------ 100 253 000 - 757907169
Low temperature might prolong drive life, and the rest looks good.

I'd keep an eye on it and have a backup drive ready to replace it if it fails. If it's under warranty I'd send them the S.M.A.R.T. info and see if they'll cover a replacement drive.

This value is not yet reliable, however you can use this as an indicator. The paper suggests that any value 55 or below warrants attention. I have attached two papers which discusses the Seagate SMART Attributes. The best way, in my opinion, to see if you have any real errors is the take the RAW value and divide it by #FFFFFFFF (4294967295), the whole number is the total number of actual errors. Example: Raw = 13884901885 / 4294967295 = 3.23 = 3 Errors. This goes for Seek Error Rates as well.

Here is a link to a great explanation as well which I ran across years ago. I like the way it explains the VALUE number and what it means.

Thank you all, I have reached out to the seller, I don't expect to hear from them until Monday though. Hopefully they will warranty the drive. I have also changed my SMART schedules, I had a short once per week and long once per month, I have changed it to daily short and long once per week.

After my reply last night a scrub ran, and then a SMART Long on every drive, the drive in question faulted at that point and a hot spare took over. Resilver went much faster then I would have expected with 20TB drives and 60TB of data and only took ~4 hours. Hopefully the seller will warranty it when I hear from them next week, if not it is under warranty from Seagate still until December according to their warranty check. Thank you for the help everyone.
