Received alert "failed to read SMART Attribute Data" but all tests look clean as far as I can tell?

This morning, I got the following email alert:

Device: /dev/sdd [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data.

The drives have scheduled smart tests. I have read this guide and looked through it: https://www.truenas.com/community/r...bleshooting-guide-all-versions-of-freenas.17/ My google searching hasn't found anything concerning with this alert by itself, but instead with other errors that come with that alert? As far as I can tell, there's no other concerning metrics with this device. I will say, this was a Truenas Core 12.1 system recently migrated to Truenas Scale; I'm wondering if that has an impact on whether I should be concerned with this alert or not.

I hopped on and ran a smart test on the device and all partitions:

In this image you can see I have short and long tests scheduled and running, all show clean results:

As far as I can tell, this error is just a red herring and nothing I am seeing indicates any real errors? Am I reading this all correct? I just initiated a manual long test with "smartctl –t long /dev/sdd" and will see what the result is.

Sounds like it might have been a fluke. If it were me, I would likely continue using it and keep an eye out for any additional errors or if it happens again.

That said, you will need to decide how cautious to be based on your circumstances/needs. Nobody can know for sure how many ways hardware can fail. That the test, when performed, shows clean is comforting. But, does not necessarily mean everything about the drive is healthy.

That is my instinct. I have 2 spare 4TB drives in box, and I was gonna use one of them to replace one of the last 2 2TB drives I have in the nas, but maybe I'll hang onto them for a week as spares.

Part of my equation on this is whether or not the drives are still under warranty. It's kind of an easy decision if they are and something truly is wrong.

There's just some risk introduced too when you replace the drive. So, you don't want to do it unnecessarily.

May be connected to the WD40EFAX drives being SMR.
The resilver of 1.8T in 8 hours is really slow.
