Hi,

I am new to freenas. I am trying to configure the iscsi target on freenas. I added the device extend and associated it with the target. after that when i try to restart the iscsi service, the service is failing. when i checked the console of freenas i could see the "auto size error". I tried the association with the file extend and it is working fine. Please help.

Regards,
Arumon

Which version of FreeNAS? And are you using a zvol or something else for the device extent?

version =9.2.1.5

I am not using zvol. I am creating extend using the device option. The file option is working fine.

Which is why I asked about the type of device These are your choices for a device extent, which one are you using?

Device extent: virtualizes an unformatted physical disk, RAID controller, zvol, zvol snapshot, or an existing HAST device.

OK. I am running freenas on a VM. Hence the type of device is a vmdk disk on the freenas vm.
I have tried creating device extend with zfs volume and associate it with iscsi target, then it is working fine. but when i tried to create device extend directly with the device name da1, and associated it with iscsi target then the iscsi service not getting started.

I double-checked, and a vmdk is not a supported device for a device extent. I'll add a note to the docs for 9.2.2.

A note shouldn't be necessary. That's like including a reminder that you shouldn't pour oil in your gas tank and expect it to work.

Someone trying to use a vmdk as an iscsi extent really doesn't understand the technology enough and is just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks.
