For what it's worth, I am running FreeNAS7 successfully on two systems that had AHCI/IDE time-out issues. The version of FreeBSD that 7 is based on clearly handles this stuff differently from 8.

Sorry to hear it, spawn27! I'm going to give freenas7 a whirl, but i suppose I'll might end up with whs again :P Good luck with your HD's!

unfortunately just today I bought 2 new 2Tera HD "brothers" of the other 2 that I easly mounted....but.... they are not recognized!!!!

so I'm now really angry with freenas!!!!

I have similar problem.
Why I cannot create a new volume? On newly installed 8.0.1 RC2 FreeNAS (on very old machine: ProLiant DL580 G2), which is located on the HDD (RAID 5), in Create Volume, Member disks, field is blank.
result "gpart show":

Do I need to install FreeNAS 0.7?

It looks like you installed FreeNAS on the hard drive you plan to use for storage. Please take a look at the 'Unofficial FAQ' in my signature. Using FreeNAS is this way is not supported. da0s1 looks like your USB flash drive, but there is no FreeNAS installed on it. You cannot run FreeNAS from your hard drive and use it as a disk for storage. The disk for storage must only be used for storage and FreeNAS must be installed on your flash drive and run from that.

I'm encountering a similar issue on a Rackable Systems 2U with a multi-disk array (mounted as twa0). It does not detect the 4 disks I want to use as mirrored storage, yet when I plug in a USB drive it picks that right up. The disk array is a 3wave Series 9000 controller, with binary driver. Find attached below the dmesg. Any ideas?

I'm not physically near the machine at the moment but the gpart show was similar to the one posted above, only with a greater amount of "-free-" storage attached to the end of da0. I don't know if this is the twa0 mount or if such a mount exists on my system.
