Newbie Alert :) Getting started

Hi, I am just preparing to set up an ISCSI SAN and am preparing to purchase a used iscsi SAN. I am just wondering what I need to start this off. I have a Dell 2850 to act as the server, Win 2008 Server. I can install linux if need be though. My question is do I need to purchase proprietary software (from lefthand in this case) or will FreeNas find and configure the drives? Also, as this SAN has built-in raid, will FreeNAS be able to configure using the hardware raid?

Last I heard (perhaps 6mo ago), FreeNAS was not capable of acting as an iSCSI initiator, only a target. As such, it would not be able to use your LeftHand.
