I used the excellent hardware guide on the forum as a reference, and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything or mis-read something... Also, will this hardware configuration work as well on the new version?

I will be running 6-10 drives (eventually) and will not be using things like encryption.

With that many drive bays (you can add another 3 hotswap into the 2x 5.25"), plus whatever internal 2.5" mounts it has, you may want to consider the Supermicro X11SSL-CF, or even X11SSH-CTF (if you want 10gbe)

The X11SSL-CF will directly support 14 drives.

X11SSM-F will only directly support 8 drives, before you need to add another HBA. If you're planning on adding an HBA, then it might make sense to get one built-in to the board upfront.

Thanks for that, I was looking to the X11SSM-F-O because it has 2 more SATA ports, so I figured I could run 2-4 disk arrays of RAID-10 that way. I guess I could get a PCIe controller for that though...

Both the Supermicro X11SSL-CF and X11SSH-CTF support 8 ports of SAS, (which is SATA compatible), in addition to the SATA ports. You just have to use a breakout cable, (SAS 4 port connector to 4 individual SATA connectors).

Plus, we generally don't use RAID-10 terminology with ZFS. It's Striped Mirrored vDevs, which is similar but has some differences.

If you are not familar with ZFS, read up. It's different enough that people new to ZFS can make less than optimal choices.

For basic gigabit fileserving, and nothing more, it should be fine.

That is a Skylake and I read somewhere that they don't support something (ecc memory?)

Edit: I think I am confused, I think it was the Kaby Lake processors that don't support it... Can't find that article now though.

You would most likely be better off with RAID-z2 instead of Striped Mirrors.
Unless you are planning to use this for hosting VMs that you want to have high IOPS.

What is this going to be used for?

What you plan to do with the system affects the hardware selection.

Basically just file storage for now; don't see much more than that.
Have you looked into the plugins that FreeNAS can run? There is so much more that FreeNAS can offer, but it is all down to what you want.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I've decided to go with the Supermicro X11SSL-CF. Board and the Core i3-6100 CPU. I also decided to change cases to the
Fractal Design Node 804 MicroATX Cube Case FD-CA-NODE-804-BL because it is more Compact and seems to handle just as many drives.

I do have a question about what kind of cabling I'm going to need, I assume the power supply will come with enough power cables for my drives, but would like some suggestions on the other cables.

Also, it has been a long time since I've done a build and it used to be that you had to put memory in the motherboard in pairs, I doubt that still the case though but would just using one stick of RAM work?

It is conceivable that memory performance might be slightly better with two banks populated, but it should be fine. Unless you need more memory for the ARC which depends on what capacity hard drives you planning to use?
