Huh, I've never used FreeNAS as a live CD, so I didn't realize it was read-only. Try creating a folder somewhere else. Another option would be to copy it over the network to another computer with sftp or scp.

how else would i access a command line?
i installed freenas on another USB drive. would that work?

ok. i booted into a fresh install of freenas, from the console i option 9. SHELL
i was able to create directory you specified but i get an error when i try to mount it.
error "mount: /dev/da1: Invalid argument"

Is da1 actually your flashdrive? I was just using da1 as an example.

yes it is.i confirmed by pulling it out, running command ls /dev/da*
then inserting and running command again to check output.

Is your flashdrive formatted? If so, which filesystem?

by any chance, is there a way to mount or import the data unto the new freenas installation i have without data loss?
