With SMB2 preferred over AFP for Time Machine, is there any setting we need to enable to get the most out of it? I'm not in front of my NAS atm but hopefully someone has some insight on this

Everything I see indicates that AFP is still required for TimeMachine.

For mac you can always use a proper backup software instead of timemachine.
Google is your friend as you will want to test which you like better.

Heh, TM is a proper backup mechanism. What's your complaint?

Just updated my hackintosh to Mavericks. Time Machine works fine so far. Using AFP by the way.

I mounted an smb share through smb://IP_OF_NAS, but Time Machine didn't see the mounted share. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks there'll be more people who can offer advice.

I'm a bit confused now, is the whole Mavericks supporting smb2 for TM an actual thing without having to have together a solution? I've read a few sites claiming that it was supported in 10.9, but none with guides on how to set it up.

Oh wait hold on, I think smb2 is just the default protocol for sharing files, it has nothing to do with TM. Is this right?
